Large Clear Laminated Storefront Glass Replacement – Westminster, California
Large, Clear, Laminated, Storefront Glass Replacement – Westminster, California
Not every broken window tells the same story. Sometimes the best glass choice is not just about what is strongest before it breaks, but what happens after it breaks.
This project took us to a commercial building in Westminster, California, where a large, clear laminated glass window had been damaged. The glass was cracked, but it was still safely held together by the inner plastic layer inside the laminated safety glass.
That is one of the biggest benefits of laminated glass.
Instead of falling out of the opening, the broken glass stayed in place.
Why Laminated Glass Made a Difference
Large commercial windows almost always need to be safety glass. Two common safety glass options are tempered glass and laminated glass, but they behave very differently when they break.
Tempered glass is stronger than annealed glass. In fact, fully tempered glass is generally about four times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness. But when tempered glass breaks, it usually breaks into small pieces and falls out of the opening.
Laminated glass is different.
Laminated glass is made with a plastic interlayer between two pieces of glass. The glass itself may crack, but the inner layer helps hold the broken glass together. In this case, that made a big difference. The window was damaged, but the glass stayed in place while the replacement was ordered.
That meant the client did not need an emergency board-up while waiting for the new glass.
Tempered Glass vs. Laminated Glass
Tempered glass is often the better choice when strength against everyday impact is the priority. It is stronger, costs less, and works well for many storefront and door applications.
Laminated glass is often the better choice when security, glass retention, or post-breakage safety matters more.
For this Westminster project, laminated glass was the better fit because the window was large and staying in place after breakage was important.
A small, hard impact may cause tempered glass to fully break and fall out. Laminated glass may still crack from that kind of impact, but it is more likely to stay together because of the interlayer.
That does not mean laminated glass is always the best choice. If a window or door gets bumped frequently by carts, equipment, or heavy traffic, tempered glass will last longer because it is stronger against impact. But when the goal is to keep the glass together after a break, laminated glass has a clear advantage.
A Better Choice for Security
For security, laminated glass is usually the better option.
It will not stop every break-in, and no glass should be described as burglar-proof. But laminated glass can slow someone down because the glass does not immediately fall out when broken. The interlayer helps keep the opening covered, making it harder to quickly create a clear opening.
For businesses, that extra delay can matter.
Replacing the Damaged Laminated Glass
For this project, we replaced the damaged large clear laminated safety glass with new laminated glass to match the existing application.
The goal was not just to replace the broken window. It was to preserve the benefit the client already had: a large window that could crack but remain in place long enough to avoid an immediate open hole in the building.

Commercial Laminated Glass Replacement in Westminster
Every glass type has strengths and limits. Tempered glass is stronger before it breaks. Laminated glass performs better after it breaks.
For this Westminster commercial window, laminated glass helped protect the building by staying together after damage. We replaced it with new, clear, laminated safety glass so the client could keep the same safety and security benefits going forward.
