Large Tempered Transom Glass Replacement for Retail Store – Anaheim, California

Sometimes replacing broken glass isn't just about installing new glass—it's about helping the customer choose the right solution to prevent the problem from happening again.

This project took us to a shoe store in Anaheim, California, where a large transom window above the storefront entrance had broken. The transom measured approximately 30 square feet, making it much larger than the average transom window and requiring two technicians and scaffolding to complete the installation safely.

Looking Beyond the Broken Glass

One of the first questions we ask is, "Why did the glass break?"

In this case, the exact cause wasn't completely clear. The fracture pattern suggested the possibility of thermal stress (heat fracturing), although building movement or other stresses may also have contributed.

The store regularly places promotional posters behind the transom glass. While the posters are an important part of attracting customers, they can also trap heat behind the glass, increasing the likelihood of thermal stress on large glass panels.

Rather than simply replacing the glass with the same product, we discussed the situation with the client and recommended a solution better suited to how they use their storefront.

Choosing Tempered Safety Glass

For this project, we installed new clear tempered safety glass.

Although laminated glass and heat-strengthened glass are often excellent choices for overhead applications, the combination of this window's large size and the client's use of promotional graphics made tempered safety glass the best fit.

Tempered glass provides:

• Reduced risk of future breakage in this application

Our goal wasn't just to replace the broken glass—it was to help provide a longer-lasting solution that supports the way the client uses their storefront.

A Safe Installation

Because of the size and height of the glass, this project required:

• Scaffolding for safe access

• Careful removal of the damaged panel

• Precise installation of the new tempered glass

Large overhead glass requires careful planning, proper lifting techniques, and attention to safety from start to finish.

The storefront was restored with a new clear tempered safety glass panel, giving the client a clean, professional appearance while allowing them to continue displaying promotional graphics with greater confidence.
